Licking County Drainage Maintenance Program
In 2006, Licking SWCD began assisting the Licking County Commissioners and Licking County Engineer's Office with the Drainage Maintenance Program in Licking County. The Drainage Maintenance Program, authorized under chapter 6131 of the Ohio Revised Code, allows for the upkeep of drainage improvements within the County.
Drainage projects include open ditches, subsurface tile mains, surface drains, and subdivision storm water systems. Maintenance actions include annual inspections, vegetation control via mowing and spraying, brush and tree clearing and snagging, sediment removal, bank stabilization, etc. Licking SWCD performs any engineering required for ditch re-grading or structural repairs and works with the Commissioners to bid the required work out to contractors.
Drainage projects are paid for and maintained by assessments placed on the residents who either drain to or benefit from a given drainage project. Assessments are collected in conjunction with property taxes. A separate account exists for each subdivision or drainage project and the money may be used only on the project for which it was collected.
