X-WR-CALDESC:The River Round Up began as a Newark City Litter initiative
in 1988 to clean up the Licking River. The annual river clean up brought o
ut hundreds of volunteers who pulled tires\, shopping carts and mountai
ns of trash from an 18 mile stretch of the river. Through their efforts\,
a river that had all but been abandoned\, has seen a rebirth of aquatic a
nd bird life. \n\nDue to the closing of a canoe livery and the changing o
f staff\, the River Round Up ended in 2003.\n\nAfter a break of eight year
s\, several Licking County and City of Newark agencies came together to br
ing back the River Round Up in 2011. The recent clean ups have been
very successful.\n\nIn 2014\, for the 20th anniversary of the River Round
Up\, our goal was to continue to branch out into the community and clean u
p more waterways throughout the county. We succeeded by expanding the cl
ean up to Pataskala\, Union Township\, Granville\, and Hebron\, in additio
n to maintaining the clean ups in Newark\, Blackhand Gorge\, St. Louisvill
 e\, and Buckeye Lake. \n\nIn 2015\, Shackleford's Disposal came on board a
s our Presenting Sponsor. We added the City of Heath as a new clean up lo
cation near Hoback Park and The Dawes Arboretum joined the committee.\n\nF
or 2019\, we are looking forward to another successful clean up\, new part
ners and volunteers\, and continuing to raise awareness about taking care
of our waterways. \n\nRegistration opens on July 1st.
