 nt exists to raise awareness about the importance of wetland ecosystems fo
 r both people and the planet\, to raise awareness on how quickly wetlands 
 are are being destroyed\, and to promote the conservation and restoration 
 of wetlands worldwide. The day marks the date of the adoption of the 'Conv
 ention on Wetlands of International Importance' held in 1971 in the Irania
 n City of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.\nThrough the designatio
 n of protected areas\, the implementation of effective policies\, and the 
 sharing of knowledge\, the Convention enables countries to take measures t
 o protect their wetlands and to use them wisely. Adopted in 172 countries\
 , each country joining the Convention must designate at least one wetland 
 to be included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar
  sites).
