Be Smart with your Salt Usage
Road salt is used to ensure safe conditions during winter storms with ice and snow. In the community salt is applied to sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots. Due to the increased salt usage, the amount of salt in local waterways and drinking water is rising.
What effect does Salt have...?
- Once salt gets into the environment, it is very difficult and expensive to remove.
- Salt can have severe impacts on the pets, fish, macroinvertebrates, and other wildlife.
- Metal on vehicles and bridges corrodes very easily when salt concentrations are high.
- Vegetation may become burnt from a sudden high salt content.
How can you help...?
- Shovel first
- Calculate the correct amount of salt you will need. More salt does not mean faster melting.
- Evenly distribute the salt.
- Check the temperature. Rock salt does not work below 15 degrees, so choose different solutions for certain situations.
