Hazardous Waste Disposal
Hazardous Waste Disposal
Household chemicals such as cleaners, paints, lawn chemicals, motor oil, batteries, and others are considered hazardous waste. This means that these materials cannot be thrown into a regular trash bin, but need to be disposed of in a professional manor. This can create barriers as there a limited places to dispose of hazardous materials.
If hazardous wastes are not disposed of properly, they can create serious problems if they come into contact with water sources. For example, it only takes one gallon of motor oil to contaminate one million gallons of drinking water!
Follow these tips for proper waste disposal:
- Mix cat litter with old paint to dry it out - once dry, it can be thrown into a normal garbage can
- Carefully read labels to know what can and cannot be thrown out
- Never mix two products together
- Never poor chemicals down the drain, bury them in the ground, or burn them
- Bring wastes to a local drop-off site
- Donate paint or household cleaners to community organizations that might need them
- Some products can be recycled - check the label for more information
